Biography:
Svartby (pronounced as sva:tbi) is a band from Saint-Petersburg that perform in the genre of folk metal. Their songs tell about an imaginary «Black Village» (from the Swedish: Svartby) that is inhibited by the mean and cheerful magical creatures (witches, ghosts, dwarves etc).
Svartby is the only band in Russia that sing his songs in Swedish.
The band was formed in 2004, by Giftsvamp and Lindwurm, who left the dead-metal band Nordlicht.
By the October 2004, the band had the following members:
* Giftsvamp — keyboards
* Lindwurm — guitar
* Torhall — vocals, bass
* Hemskalf — guitar, clear vocal
* Somna — drums
In the beginning, their style was defined as folk metal. The theme of their first text determined the conception and the name of the band — magical fancy creatures, living in the «Black Village», opposing people, who are the devastators of nature.
The first EP-demo «Kom I Min Kittel» was recorded in February 2005; in June, the band had their first performance in Saint- Petersburg. In October 2005, Hemskalf left the band for the personal matters and his place took the new guitarist Hök. The band descided to give up of a clear vocal.
In the years of 2005—2007, the band become more popular and recognizible in Saint- Petersburg. Since 2007, the band was regularly giving concerts beyond Saint- Petersburg. Svartby has performed on a one scene with such bands as Ensiferum, Cruachan, Manegarm, Helheim and Torture Killer.
In 2007, at the label FONO comes their debute album «Kom I Min Kittel» («Come into My Couldron»), telling about the witches of the «Black Village». After half of a year, the band has recorded a new conceptual EP «Tomte», that tells the story of a ghost who left his sweet home and went to the dwarves of Svartby. EP was released in the internet.
In 2008, the debute album «Kom I Min Kittel» was released in Europe at the German label Trollzorn. In June 2008, the band entered into agreement with the label Trollzorn and in October they started recording a new conceptual album «Riv, Hugg och Bit» («Tear, Cut, Bite») that tells about the dwarves of the «Black Village». In album combination and mastering took part Rene Berthiaume, creater and guitarist of the German folk-metal band Equilibrium.
«Riv, Hugg och Bit» was released at the label Trollzorn on the 29th of August, 2009.
In June 2009, the song «Humus», from the album «Riv, Hugg och Bit», was included into compilation of the British Jornal Metal Hammer - Battle Metal VIII.
In 2009, for the changed musical priorities, the frontman Torhall, guitarist Hök and drummer Somna left the band. The new members became the Frontman/ bass Skrik, drummer Fenrir and guitarist Loki.
